I love how the old testament has so many things that happen in real life that picture something supernatural and spiritual.

Take for example when the Israelites were in the wilderness, fleeing from exile, heading towards the promised land and they were hungry.  Their reaction always amuses me – they were slaves in Egypt, treated terribly, forced to work in extreme conditions, oppressed and persecuted, yet here they complaining and wishing they were back in Egypt where I quote “here we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”  Now from reading previous chapters of the conditions they faced I’m not sure their filter was accurate.  They’re painting their past like it was satisfactory and forgetting that they belong to the God of miracles who split the sea to set them free.   And I confess I have read it and gone silly Israelites, you are so stupid, how could you forget your God, oh ye of little faith.

Until God reminded me, that I too am like a silly Israelite, forgetting my God, oh me of little faith.

We have moments in our life when the journey when hardship comes from left field, or things aren’t working out like we expected and we forget that the God who does miracles is with us and for us and at work doing a zillion things behind the scenes but we might see only 3 of them.

Gods solution to their complaining met their needs on a practical level but also on a spiritual level.  God provided manna that would fall every morning – like a supernatural bread that would appear around them – that they were to gather every day.  They were to gather just enough for that day for themselves or their families.  There were of course some that tried to hoard but when they went to open their manna pantry the next day their manna had rotted and was filled with worms!

Everyday they had to gather the manna for that day.

Everyday they had to find their satisfaction in God.

Everyday they got a tangible reminder that God is with them and for them.

Everyday they got a reminder that they are special to God.

Something in real life that reveals something supernatural and spiritual.

Everyday we have to gather the manna for our day.

Everyday we have to find satisfaction in God.

Everyday we need that tangible reminder that God is with us and for us and that we are His children and that He loves us with a never ending love.

Now we’re not heading out the backdoor to the lawn to pick up the days kai, our manna is time spent with God, in His word, in prayer, in worship and its not filling our bellies but filling our spirits and souls with peace, hope, grace and wisdom that being in God’s presence gives.

Jesus said in Matthew 4:4 that we do not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from God.

The passion bible puts it like this: Bread alone will not satisfy,[d]
but true life is found in every word,
which constantly goes forth from God’s mouth.”

This popped up on my facebook feed and made my heart pause.

Wow.

This is my heartbeat.  This is my way.

Leadership is about community and having a common WHY and one heart, one mind, one purpose.

Together we do this thing.

Proverbs encourages us to “Above everything else guard your heart, because from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23)

Everything flows from having a well heart, a heart in right relationship first with God and secondly with each other.  Vertical and horizontal health.

When our hearts are discouraged or disillusioned and unwell, we attribute negativity and bad motivations to people.  We are critical and don’t give ourselves fully to serving.  We are divided.  This affects attitudes and our own motivations.  We become hurt and offended.   It creates a gap in relationships, vertical and horizontal.

Our hearts matter.

When our hearts are well we are encouraged and inspired.  We are positive and motivated.  We cover and overlook mistakes, working together to develop strengths, serving with all we are.  We are unified and on the same page, able to be real and vulnerable and creative, discussing ideas freely with no sense of shame or fear.  We laugh and have fun.  We grow.

One of my great goals as a youth pastor is to create a leadership team that is more than just doing a job together.  Together we care passionately, live passionately, serve passionately.  This happens when we’re on the same page, where we are intentional about creating community and doing life together.

Together.

7 Arrows for Bible Reading – Gospel Coalition

The seven arrows of Bible reading were an attempt at developing a tool for proper hermeneutics to power these relationships. We did not want our people to simply talk about the Bible. We wanted them to understand the Bible and know how to apply it to their lives. Each cluster would read a predetermined passage of Scripture and discuss it using these seven arrows.

The goal was for the clusters to start by summarizing the main point of the passage as succinctly as possible, ideally in one sentence.

HOW CAN YOU BE A LEADER RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, EVEN IF YOU’RE AT THE BOTTOM? –  JOHN C. MAXWELL.

I often hear this question from younger aspiring leaders. They want to apply my teaching to their current situation, but they don’t know how.

The good news is that you can be a leader no matter where you are. You don’t need a title. You don’t need a position. You don’t need a formal education. All you need to begin is the desire to lead and the willingness to learn. The key is influence.

Leadership Is Influence

You might have heard me say this before. But it’s still true: Your ability to influence others will be the single greatest factor in your success as a leader. Author and professor Harry Allen Overstreet asserted, “The very essence of all power to influence lies in getting the other person to participate.” Influence is an invitation anyone can make to another person.

Therapists and others who study human behaviour will tell you there’s only one difference between those who succeed and those who don’t. “It’s all about their habits,” they say. 

 

1. They reveal what you value least—and most.

2. They reveal where you spend your time.

3. They reveal the state of your mental health.

4. They reveal the state of your spiritual health.

5. They reveal the state of your physical health.

Tell me your dreams and then show me your calendar.

Tell me what’s most important in your life and then show me how that is really actioned in your life.

A habit as simple as arriving late or constantly procrastinating can show what you rank at the bottom of your scale of priorities—and also what you rank at the top. What do you hold as important and unimportant in this life? Just take a look at your habits. They will speak for themselves—and most likely, they will speak to others as well.

If you have a habit of working hard, helping others or always being on time to work, it shows that you see a great deal of value in your future, your character and your work ethic. Likewise, if you are always late, interrupt times with friends because you always answer your phone or commit initially only to back out late, it will be clear to the people around you what comes first in your life—and what doesn’t.  It destroys credibility.  It empties the relational bank account and creates distrust.  Trust is such a great lubricant for promotion and opportunity – without trust the opportunities and promotions pass by us and restrict us to a lower level of adventure and experience.  Good habits foster good relationships and a healthy relational bank account.  They demonstrate personal integrity and capability and contribute to a proven track record of faithfulness.

Small things have a larger role in who we are and who we are becoming.  They create a big picture view of who we are.  We may consider some habits as inconsequential but they have an impact in creating credibility with people which in turn has an impact on where we are heading in life.  

Habits can hinder us, or they can be shining stars in the way we live our life publicly and privately.

2. They reveal where you spend your time.

Habits don’t just happen overnight. If a habit takes 30 days to form, then those 30 days will tell you a lot about your commitments. Are you cutting down on your Starbucks habit so that you can read the Bible in the morning before work? Or are you routinely hitting snooze and falling off your exercise program 10 days in? We all have the same 24 hours in a day, and have to make choices about we’re using our time. We make trade-offs based on what we consider most important at the time—for better or for worse.

I myself have worked hard at creating a habit of getting up early and exercising.  This habit says that YES I do value my health, wellbeing and also the dreams I have that require me to be fit and able instead of sick and tired.  I have had to make significant choices that support my new habit and deal with the voices in my head that entice me to hit snooze.  But I value the progress I am making over another hour or so of sleep.  I trade sleep for long term gain.

3. They reveal the state of your mental health.

Some habits are internal, more than external. They live in our thought processes, our attitudes and our outlook. And if these mental habits go unchecked, it can cause us to live in a state of mental compression because our habits are living our lives for us. But the truth is, mental health is the beginning of all habitual health problems. If a habit, such as envy, lust, comparison, discontent, takes root in your mind, that mental habit is eventually going to be given the reins to the rest of your health if not taken care of.

Creating a new habit is a mental challenge.  It requires will power and discipline.  It requires us to have a bigger YES in our lives that empowers us to say no. 

Steven Furtick says that our mind is like a factory.  We are the quantity managers the determine whether a thought, a product of that factory, meets the grade or needs to be rejected and taken off the production line before it gets delivered into the world.  Likewise our habits.  We can choose how we live our life.  We can chose our habits.  

We demolish argument s and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and
we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Becoming aware of our habits doesnt need to be limited to actions but also our emotions and the very way we think and process information.

In UNGLUGED, Lysa Terkeurst instructed participants (our mums group) to keep a reaction journal.  To document those moments when we came unglued and reacted to a situation in unpleasant ways.  This revealed our current status quo.  It intentionally caused us to become aware of what emotional habits we had and then was the springboard to choose new emotional habits, to create a new normal.

 

4. They reveal the state of your spiritual health.

Your habits play a massive role in your sinful nature. Our habits are shaped by either a self-disciplined will, or a powerful felt need—and the latter can often pull us into habitual sin. If you really think about it, most sin is derived from a habit that has been formed over an extensive period of time, and then exposes itself when that habit yearns to be activated. On the other hand, forming habits of prayer and worship can also create virtuous habits that can counteract the destructive pull toward sin. 

The choices we make and the habits we live either feed our flesh or feed our spirit.

 

If you are guided by the Spirit, you won’t obey your selfish desires. 17 The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should. 18 But if you obey the Spirit, the Law of Moses has no control over you. Galatians 5:16-18

Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires. Romans 13:14

 

5. They reveal the state of your physical health.

We’re a society of busy people—and there’s a multitude of fast food, drive-thru options just for our convenience.

Look at your food and exercise habits: do you make late-night chocolate runs, put off your gym membership renewal, lounge around playing video games all weekend? Or do you make it a point to work out three times a week, floss your teeth daily, fill your shopping basket with fresh veges? Your habits will tell you a thing or two about your physical health.  If you want to improve your health and wellbeing then change your habits.

It’s easy to go about our days as usual—with our habits and routines fixed in place without a thought. But if we do evaluate our default patterns, we might learn what we’re doing well and where we have room for improvement. And in 30 days, we might even be able to turn ourselves around and create new normals in our lifestyle.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.  Galatians 6:7-8

Sow healthy habits and reap health.  Sow a block of chocolate a day… and  yes.

For a few years running I could’ve been nominated for Miserable Person of the Year.

Really, I had a stellar campaign going.  I was bitter. Frustrated. Angry at God, man and myself. My life wasn’t turning out to be the success-fest like I’d planned and somebody, everybody was to blame. But it didn’t take long to realize that being miserable all the time, funnily enough, is a miserable way to live.

Now after years of studying, writing and researching, here are what I believe are the seven habits of highly miserable people and how we cure each one:

The Game That Can Add 10 Years To Your Life – Tedtalk

Now, I want to take this problem seriously. I mean, I want games to be a force for good in the world. I don’t want gamers to regret the time they spent playing, time that I encouraged them to spend. So I have been thinking about this question a lot lately. When we’re on our deathbeds, will we regret the time we spent playing games?

Now, this may surprise you, but it turns out there is actually some scientific research on this question. It’s true. Hospice workers, the people who take care of us at the end of our lives, recently issued a report on the most frequently expressed regrets that people say when they are literally on their deathbeds. When lightning strikes, it actually liberates nitrates that help fertilize the soil. Storm updrafts remove large amounts of pollution, while storm rainfall washes more pollution out of the air.

Storms don’t just destroy. They heal.

Now the universe is built on laws. Men of science throughout history have known that everything in our universe is under the reign of law. The entire world of physical science is dominated by laws. Whether you’re talking about everything from astronomy and agronomy and biology and botany clear to the end of the alphabet and zoology, all of those areas of study are absolutely predictable, because the universe is built on absolute physical laws.

If you are driving down a road at 100km hr and get to a corner that says 45km hour – chances are pretty high that you’re going end up getting hurt because the law of physics is in operation. Even if you have a Christian radio station on. And a Christian bumper sticker. The laws of physics apply to you regardless of your salvation status.

I the same way the laws of life and living apply to us.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:7-9

 

Direction determines destination. Every time.

We have to connect the dots between the choices they make and the outcomes they experience.

Are there discrepancies between what you desire in your heart and what you are doing with your life?

Direction is everything.  Direction determines destination.  That is why we cannot afford to live disconnected lives. When we discover those subtle and sometimes not so subtle discrepancies between intent and lifestyle we should stop and pay attention. 

We should break the habit of drawing a circle around individual decisions and events and dismissing them as isolated occurrences.  These are steps.  Steps that lead somewhere.  Because life is connected.

The principal of the path is operating in your life every minute of every day.  You are currently on a financial path of some kind, you are on a relational path, you are continuing down a moral and ethical path.  And each of these paths has a destination.  My hope is that by becoming aware of this powerful principal you will have the wisdom to know which path to choose and the courage to stay the course.

The challenging aspect about picking the right paths is that the choices are NOW.  The outcomes are LATER.  The decisions you make today have ramifications down the road.

7 Arrows for Bible Reading – Gospel Coalition

The seven arrows of Bible reading were an attempt at developing a tool for proper hermeneutics to power these relationships. We did not want our people to simply talk about the Bible. We wanted them to understand the Bible and know how to apply it to their lives. Each cluster would read a predetermined passage of Scripture and discuss it using these seven arrows.

The goal was for the clusters to start by summarizing the main point of the passage as succinctly as possible, ideally in one sentence.
