Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
the word or concept of “gift” communicates the idea of no obligation, no paying back, no strings attached
think of kids and how they receive gifts on Christmas day – joyfully, openly, willingly, with no compulsion to pay the gift back
what do we do to try and repay God’s free gift?
being good and nice
trying hard to be a good christian
* yeah how pathetic is this list!
but remember, none of those things sway the balance of God’s grace towards us. there is no amount of helping or being nice that can earn the love of God. it is a gift. realizing it that God’s love and grace are a gift lifts the burden of “doing” off us, freeing us up to respond, willingly, to receive His love. it washes over performance anxiety and takes us into relationship. the gift of God’s grace is such an undoing concept. there is nothing i can do to rescue myself or improve myself, but Jesus loves me regardless and died to set me free and restore me.
Romans 5:15-16 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God
Why do we typically feel the need to earn someone’s gift to us, or at least pay him or her back for it somehow?
What’s God telling you today about His free gift in Jesus?
