It’s not wrong to feel fear.  It IS wrong to let that fear have the last word in your life. The people who accomplish the most astounding things for God’s glory aren’t the people who feel the least fear.  Often they’re the ones who deal with the most intense fear.  But instead of letting that fear disable their dreams, they start increasing their capacity for faith.  Steven Furtick

It’s all about perspective i think.  How BIG is God to you?  How POWERFUL is God to you?  The BIGGER He is the more we will trust Him and the more we will step out.  The more it’s all about Him and His power empowering us the more we’ll step out and be a jar of clay for Him to demonstrate His love and power through. The more we realize that it’s His power through us the more we’ll step out in faith to do the works He has called us to do.  The more we trust Him and have faith in HIS ABLENESS the more we’ll really live the adventure we’re called to live.

Knowing the truth of what GOD says about you will set you free to be you.

Many people are bound up in untruths and deceptions from the enemy – and insults and criticisms and rejections and judgements that people have told us that the enemy has used to construct a prison of limitations. But Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and set us free.

God’s Word is the truth. It is the truth about spiritual things and about who He is and about how we are to live our lives. It is the truth about what God can do and will do and it is the truth about who He has made us to be.

A lot of times, our greatest fears are rooted in personal insecurities.  The perspective of faith enables us to see who we truly are in Christ.  God is on our side.  Through Jesus, we are righteous.  We are cleansed.  We are accepted. Steven Furtick

7. I am (or will be) a faithful spouse and a godly parent- our family is blessed (Deuteronomy 6:6-9, Ephesians 5:25-27, Colossians 3:18-19; 1 Peter 3:1-7).

8. I am completely whole- physically, mentally, and emotionally (Psalm 103:1-5; Matthew 8:16-17, 2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 Peter 2:24).

9. I am increasing in influence and favor for the kingdom of God (Genesis 45:4-8, 1 Samuel 2:26; Acts 2:37-47).

12. I am protected from all harm and evil in Jesus’ name (Genesis 50:20; Psalm 3:1-3; 2 Thessalonians 3:2-3).

The Big Question:

How does a lie hold me back?

What do I need to do to change the tape in my head?

Is there anything specific I need to change right now?

To live by faith you’re going to need to become very familiar with your bible. You’re going to need to saturate your mind with the Word of God. If your faith isn’t rooted in God’s promises, its not scriptural faith. Prioritize the presence of God in your daily life. – steven furtick – Sun stand still

Sometimes we need to re-record the tape playing in our minds. Sometimes we need to pull the tape out and rip all that brown shinny stuff out and begin again. Replace the lie with the truth of what God says about you. Because it will set you free to be you and to know His love and make Him known. “Believing God for the impossible begins with seeing the invisible – understanding what He wants to accomplish through YOU.”

Its also really good to have a strong sense of who you are in God and what He says about you because we are going to meet people in life who challenge that or try to distract us from that.

Challenge: are negative and nasty, bullies in the workplace, people who reject us and don’t like us, people we clash with or are uncomfortable around, people who make us feel insecure and stooped!

Distract: people who try to get us to do things that go against what God would like us to do, people who are trying to force their expectations and vision upon you…

Understanding who you are and who you are made to be gives you a stability and a security to not take on their opinions or be negatively affected by them.

When we know our identity before we jump into activity, we don’t have to guess how to handle the vicious lies of the enemy. Because in God we are loved, accepted, and whole. Oh, may this statement straight from God be inscribed, engraved, and tattooed in the most permanent of ways on our hearts: “Well pleased … well pleased … well pleased.”  Lysa TerKeurst

This is why understanding personality types is also really helpful because it gives you tools to work out how to interact with other people. There are also certain personality types and people that are more sensitive to the words of other people. If you are wired that way make sure you’re making God the loudest voice and that you also have good people around you who can encourage you and speak into your life. Also get strategies for brushing of the negativity so that you’re not limited by other peoples opinions.

You are NOT a grasshopper. You are an awesome child of God full of potential because we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength!

So how does this work in real life?

We often face situations that make worry or doubt. Maybe job insecurity. Maybe having to make big decisions about study courses or flatting. Maybe health worries or financial pressures. Its at those times we have to remember that we are children of God and trust our heavenly Father and live counter culture – we need to hold onto the promises of God. And in those times our true colours are often revealed. Its like when the pressure is on all the weaknesses of our personality and self are exposed and revealed…

Some simple actions and behaviours to do – to behave your way into transformation:

Find someone to pray with you and for you. Text a friend.

Be thankful – thank God for this situation and for what He IS doing and WILL do

Try not to grumble and complain and worry and get into a spiral of doubt – replace those feelings with faith and hope and if need be find a verse or a promise to COUNTER each grumble/complain/worry – so that you are fixing your eyes upon God and His reality. This doesn’t mean we turn fake, or that we paste on a happy I’m fine face, but that we don’t allow the feelings to detract from the reality that God is God and He is at work. Life is hard but God is real and love us. He is great and good.

Our pastor put it really nicely last year (was a very memorable in a good way message) when he preached from 1 peter 4:7+

1. STOP – this puts your mind in charge. It says to your body and your emotions – ‘quiet down’

2. BREATHE – amazing how when we start to get anxious our breathing can go weird! It settles our body and our emotions

3. REMIND YOURSELF OF THE PROMISE OF GOD – I’m listening to Jesus because He’s always right.

It takes practice and intention to replace a lifetime of mind habit with the truth.

"…the character of a life is not set in two or three dramatic moments, but in 10,000 little moments…" Paul Tripp

this morning our pastor shared about breaking a habit and shared an analogy i just had to pinch.  back in the 1960’s when space ships blasted off into space they had to use an immense amount of energy to break the gravitational pull of the earth (that’s what the great big thrusters are for).  then when in space, free from the gravitational pull, they release the thrusters and just have a smaller space ship that is powered by short small energy bursts.  now i’m not doing the analogy justice but the main point is that sometimes it takes a huge amount of energy to break free from the gravitational pull of a habit, but once free from that habit, it takes a smaller amount of energy to maintain the freedom.

THEREFORE THEN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us… Hebrews 12:1 AMP

we ARE overcomers and by the grace of God and the work of the Holy Spirit change is possible.  We ARE children of God, being transformed and renewed.

Lets be people that live surrendered to God, living to please Him and make Him known.

You see, the character of a life is not set in two or three dramatic moments, but in 10,000 little moments. The character that was formed in those little moments is what shapes how you respond to the big moments of life.

What leads to significant personal change?

  • 10,000 moments of personal insight and conviction
  • 10,000 moments of humble submission
  • 10,000 moments of foolishness exposed and wisdom gained
  • 10,000 moments of sin confessed and sin forsaken
  • 10,000 moments of courageous faith
  • 10,000 choice points of obedience
  • 10,000 times of forsaking the kingdom of self and running toward the kingdom of God
  • 10,000 moments where we abandon worship of the creation and give ourselves to worship of the Creator.

And what makes all of this possible? Relentless, transforming, little-moment grace. You see, Jesus is Emmanuel not just because he came to earth, but because he makes you the place where he dwells. This means he is present and active in all the mundane moments of your daily life.  And what is he doing? In these small moments he is delivering every redemptive promise he has made to you. In these unremarkable moments, he is working to rescue you from you and transform you into his likeness. By sovereign grace he places you in daily little moments that are designed to take you beyond your character, wisdom and grace so that you will seek the help and hope that can only be found in him. In a lifelong process of change, he is undoing you and rebuilding you again—exactly what each one of us needs! Paul Tripp

When it is a matter of our preferences vs His Way and His will we often bow down to the altar of self. steven furtick

God’s Word is the highest authority.  Not our feelings.  Not our preferences.

Having a BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS in our minds, hearts and spirits aligns us with what God is saying, what the truth of the matter is.  Having a BUT counters the lie of the flesh and the lie of the enemy.  Having a BUT counters the lie of doubt and fear and sin and insecurity.  Having a BUT counters circumstance and temptation. The BUT reminds us who we are and who we belong to and who we live our lives to please and honour.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS is the rock we build our life on.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS when i am tempted there is a way out and i can withstand it.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS when i am lonely that God is with me.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS when i am struggling in trial that fire and flood will not overcome me.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS when i am weary and worried that i can cast my cares on Him and find rest.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS when I am weak I am strong.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

BUT GOD’S WORD SAYS I am empowered and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Have you ever struggled with letting a circumstance that came your way recently, suddenly define you? This seems to be a lesson God lets me live over and over. He wants to be my only definition of who I am. I am a child of God, holy and dearly loved. I know this. I teach this. I believe this in the very depths of my soul. Yet, it is so easy for me to slip into redefining myself when situations arise. When hard times come and beat against our stability, we must be determined to hear God’s words and put them into practice. Then nothing can topple our peace, security, or true identity.  Lysa TerKeurst

Many people are bound up in untruths and deceptions from the enemy – and insults and criticisms and rejections and judgements that people have told us that the enemy has used to construct a prison of limitations. But Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and set us free.

How WE see ourselves has power and influence in our lives:

We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them. Numbers 13:33

Because the Israelites saw themselves as small, powerless, and insignificant they were then seen as small, powerless, insignificant grasshoppers by the people possessing the promised land. It was the peoples perception of themselves that limited their ability to take the land and have faith in God. It was the peoples incorrect perception of themselves that hijacked them fulfilling the call of God.

God’s Word is the truth. It is the truth about spiritual things and about who He is and about how we are to live our lives. It is the truth about what God can do and will do and it is the truth about who He has made us to be.

God’s Word must be elevated to the place where it is the last word in our lives.

God’s Word is the final authority in our lives.

What God says goes.

What God says is the way it is.

Not just in the DOING of our lives but in the BEING of our lives.

Not just in the DOING – the be kind and be generous, don’t give in to lust and anger and lying and ten commandments type stuff, but in the BEING of our lives – I am LOVED, I am FORGIVEN, I am PRECIOUS.

Through doing the personality tests and motivational gifts tests the idea and the hope is that you get this appreciation of how cool God has made you to be. That fearfully wonderfully made thing again and that sets you alight to love God more and receive His love more and overflow from that.

A person’s physical appearance can change dramatically over the years, but our personality is in a way ingrained for a lifetime. Through the work of the Holy Spirit each person’s inborn weaknesses can be overcome, and our strengths put to use, but the underlying personality remains relatively the same.

I think that these classifications are excellent and helpful in understanding why people act the way they do – people being us and people being other people around us.

By understanding how we’re wired we can then see how others are wired, either in similar ways or different ways. Knowing who you are and how you are wired can actually give you strategies to effectively connect and communicate with others – which is a good thing since this planet is filled with PEOPLE!

Okay… so personality types…

Generally there are 4 types – they can be called many different things:

Sanguine – playful, popular, otter, expressive

Choleric – powerful, lion, dominant

Melancholic – precise, beaver, analytical

Phlegmatic – peaceful, golden retriever, solid

We are wired a certain way – made and created and designed by God. We have experiences that shape us and train us and refine us. And we make choices that also affect who we are and what we do. There is that tension between “if I am made like X I will be like X forever” and “if God called me then HE can click His fingers and work it out like this” – a tension with that and with the reality that our choices do play a role in us living our best lives.

One particular verse that challenges me about who I am and how I am living is 2 Timothy 2:20-21

In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. 2 Timothy 2:20-21

Be someone that says YES to God. Philippians 2 says that God is at work in us to make us willing to do His will. He is leading us and guiding us. He outworks our steps. But we must say YES to that nudge and YES to His leading and YES to walking the path He sets out before us. You hear my heart?

We all have weaknesses and strengths. We all often are very aware of our weaknesses but have trouble accepting our strengths and good qualities. Esp here in New Zealand!

Knowing who God has made you to be isn’t about navel gazing or about self appreciation or looking in the mirror every day and going “how you doing?” – its about recognizing who God has made you to be, living in the freedom of that, tapping into your motivation, tapping into your strengths, being aware of your weaknesses so you can protect yourself (because weakness can sometimes lead to sin!) and then getting out there and living life to the max serving God as YOU!

Believing God for the impossible begins with seeing the invisible – understanding what He wants to accomplish through YOU.

The Big Question:

So who are you?

What makes you tick?

What are your strengths and your weaknesses?

What advantages are there to understanding your personality type?

And how does knowing those things equip you to live better and serve better?

Who you are is made up of lots of factors… Personality. Your past. Your experiences. Your future to a degree.

There are things that you will do that are genetic or that we learn from our parents. Stubbornness is a McKay genetic trait we say in our family. My kids also sleep really well – til 8 or 9am if I didn’t wake them… like their cousins on my mums side of the family. I have my fathers toes. My kids eat dried weetbix, like I did. Who is the inventor and creator of DNA? God. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Even my toes.

Your past and the things you have experienced are used to shape who you are. Both good and bad are used by God to shape character and give you life experiences that you can use.

i believe God uses the good, the bad and the ugly to shape us and to give us the platform to connect with others.  His promise is that ALL THINGS will work out for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.  Every experience, good, bad and ugly, shapes us.  But i believe that despite the pain we can choose to let those things shape us for good.  We choose mercy over bitterness.  We choose peace over pain.  We choose love over hate.  For a great analogy on this, read about Jasmine the dog

Likewise there are unique passions and giftings and good things that happen in our lives to shape who we are.  Those passions and dreams fuel vision.  When i was a child i loved writing stories.  i used to go up to our rumpus room and type out novels on my mums old typewriter.  Yes, typewriter.  Today i feel like live that dream of writing through our church magazine and this blog, and that writing is a way of communicating the good news of who God is and His Kingdom.

“Praise be to God who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” 2 Corinthians 4:1

For myself I look back at the many times we moved due to my dad’s job and how that affected me and made me who I am today. I make friends fast – because as I kid I had to. I was also slightly unremoved and unaffected by peer pressure and peoples opinions of me, because in a year or so we’d move. That experience I had growing up became part of the tapestry of my life.

I want to add a disclaimer to that: sometimes in life really bad things happen – that you have no control over. We make mistakes also and we make wrong decisions. Our attitude to that is what allows that event or those events to have power in our lives. God is a forgiving God and He turns ALL things around for good according to His purpose. His purpose is to use us to show that He is mighty and forgiving and full of compassion. But if you hold onto your guilt or allow something to shatter you without finding peace and hope and strength and healing with Jesus then you are not allowing God to be God and you are adding things to your tapestry that perhaps shouldn’t be there… hear my heart here… God is mightier than any circumstance. He is the healer of every hurt. We are overcomers. Don’t hold onto sin and hurt. Forgive and grow. Be forgiven and grow.

“Whatever you’re facing in life, or whatever is coming in your future, God has already given you the faith for it. It may not look like it, and you may not feel like you have what it takes to overcome, but faith in God isn’t based on our circumstances or how we feel.

The enemy would like for you to believe that you don’t have a chance in life, that you’re too weak, too poor, too whatever. But God has a different view of you. God sees you through the eyes of love. He sees not what you can be, but what He has invested in you, not what you or others may see.

Seeing yourself the way God sees you leads to a life of overwhelming victory.

It takes faith. You can’t just hear that God loves you and sees you as His child, you have to believe it. It takes faith to move forward and overcome the challenges of life. And faith does you no good if you don’t know how to release it. You have to release your faith in order for it to work.” Joyce Meyer

today, have faith.  have faith that God has called you and is at work in you and through you, that He has a plan and a purpose for your life and that He knows you inside out and upside down, and loves you.  Really loves you.

Always Remember, when God made you, He did so with a purpose and a plan.

He saw all of your days before you lived one of them and placed over you the covering of His protective love. He has allowed nothing to come into your life that has not first been screened through that love. His hand has remained upon you to this very day. He calls you by name. You are His beloved child…the apple of His eye… the delight of His heart.

Today you are in the exact place He wants you to be, and tomorrow He will be with you as He has always been – in goodness, in kindness, in faithfulness.

Uniqueness emerges when you become intentional about your idiosyncrasies. Steven furtick

idiosyncrasies – a behavioural attribute that is distinctive and peculiar to an individual

Each of us has been given a God given personality – a God given style of living.

You are you.  the only YOU there is.  God has wired and designed you in a particular way to fulfil a particular purpose.  only YOU can do that and BE that.  it takes a YOU to fill that position.  accept WHO God has made you to be – deal with the issues and grow – but recognize that God has fashioned and purposed you.  Relax into who you are.  Be unique.  God doesn’t need carbon copies of billy graham, kim walker smith, joyce meyer, toby mac etc.  He created THEM to be them.

Psalm 139

You have searched me, LORD,
   and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
   you, LORD, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
   your works are wonderful,
   I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

Believing God for the impossible begins with seeing the invisible – understanding what He wants to accomplish through YOU.
