Person of Interest

now in case you dont know… i’m still (yes STILL) addicted to Lost.  thats one of the reasons i love Person of Interest.  It has Ben in it.  Michael Emmerson is a brilliant actor, both when he was in Lost and here as mr finch.  i have been hanging out for S2 to start here in NZ.  well last night was IT!  Yay!  not that i watched it… i need an early night after a busy weekend and a busy upcoming week (including a parents open night at a local intermediate school!  eeek my kids are growing up!) – but i did manage to sneak a peak at another Lostie on it… made me even happier.  sometime this week i’ll make some ME time to watch it…

love love love love LOVE this book.  Pursued by Jud Wilhite is a brilliant book about grace and God’s love.  i dont think i have ever underlined most of the bible passage references in a book.   i went and read hosea today after finishing the book.  brilliance.  heart touching.  i’m reading it above at a lovely cafe in half moon bay marina called ari-tai… loving the afternoon shine and the apple cranberry drink to quench the thirst!

The good news is you don’t have to keep running. God is still pursuing you after you’ve placed your faith in Him. He’s pursuing you today—not to burden you with more tasks on the to-do list or to whip you into shape, but to love you. He pursues you with an intensity that can breathe life into you. And one of the most incredible perspectives of God’s pursuit is tucked away in the story of a prophet named Hosea who God called to marry a prostitute named Gomer. Even though his wife was unfaithful again and again, Hosea was told to take her back, just as God takes his people back. You’re passionately pursued with a goodness and unfailing love that is shocking, wonderful, and liberating.

When God wanted to illustrate the passionate intensity of His relationship with us, he chose marriage as the metaphor. Marriage pictures the special relationship God wants with us.

Yet the first time the Bible really explains the marriage metaphor, it’s not a fairy-tale story of a princess and her Prince Charming. It’s not Cinderella. Instead, God chose a relationship that’s completely fractured—the marriage of the prophet Hosea and the prostitute Gomer.

Check it out: “When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to him, ‘Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the LORD and worshiping other gods’” (Hosea 1:2).

Yep, you read that right. Not a former prostitute, but a full-fledged, card-carrying, active prostitute. It sounds insane. Ludicrous. It is. And that’s the point—we are compelled to notice God’s divine obsession with His children.

God uses their marriage to illustrate his passionate love and care for his people, who have acted like a prostitute in turning from Him. Throughout the first three chapters of Hosea, their literal marriage illustrates God’s relationship with us.

All this sounds crazy. And God is trying to shake us out of our indifference and show us something even crazier—His radical love and grace. He will continue to take his people back even when they betray Him, just as He will ask Hosea to take Gomer back again and again.

God will continue to pursue.

If the cross of Jesus Christ is the ultimate picture of God’s love in the Bible, then I’m convinced the second most powerful picture is found in Hosea.
