totally love that my son and hubby had the best times at school camp.  caleb is 10 and it is the first camp he’s  been on and the longest we’ve been apart.  not to mention lots of other firsts.  abseiling.  kayaking.  river rafting.  crating.  rock climbing.  archery.  shooting.  plus food firsts.  tony went as a parent help and out of the 8 activities he led, 5 were in the water.  webbed feet anyone.  they left monday, on the bus, with us parents all waving them off with a mixture of excitement and some nervousness.  it was awesome though – the camp had a blog which was updated regularly so i got to see photos and read journal entries about all the fun they were having. me and evangeline had girls week here at home.  she thought we might have french toast and dessert all week.  bless her.  we did have some fun girl movies and yummy treats and baked together and had a sleepover in my room which was cute.  nice to have the boys arrive home last night around dinner time and awesome to hear of all the things caleb did and how he has grown in confidence.  so love my boy!

last thursday my son, age 10, had his first ever game of rugby.  he’s on the school team.  some of the kids on his team play club rugby too but this is a new experience for caleb, and in fact half their team.  they played awesomely and when their team scored a try both me and the head teacher (my sons teacher) jumped up and down and were so happy!  the day was a mixture of sunshine – yay – and icey cold rain – not so yay.  i also love the opportunity to connect with the kids in my sons year group, boys are so awesome.

looks amazing eh.  this is the healthy food guide chicken satay.  its gluten free, dairy free and nut free.  yes i know.  but its delish and definitely not taste free!  i’ve been 8 weeks gluten free now, apart from my accidental loss of concentration last week that meant instead of buying wheat free pasta i brought and ate organic pasta.  which oh my goodness tasted amazing.  sigh.  yeah not a good week after that though.  i also totally love the gluten free chef who is a gold mine of information and inspiration as well as a really nice guy and has been super helpful with tips and ideas and answering my “duh” questions on fb!  so appreciate the community of lovely allergy people who are so willing to be supportive!

its girls week at our house this week as my son and hubby are off on school camp. evangeline thinks we’re going to have french toast and dessert all week for dinner.  cuteness.  we have carved out some special girl time though which is just lovely!

i got this as an early birthday present to myself… (ya’ll do that right…) and wow.  my highlighter is impressed.  esp as i matched the yellow from the cover with the yellow on my highlighter.  geeky i know.  but its a wow book.  convicting.  provoking.  inspiring.  heart filling.  i’m only about one chapter in but impressed.  i am a fan of matt chandler, and our housegroup are going through his philippians study, which is awesome.  i like the way it sounds like him as he speaks, his voice… one of my fav quotes, from a review is this:  “The marker of those who understand the gospel of Jesus Christ is that, when they stumble and fall, when they screw up, they run to God and not from him, because they clearly understand that their acceptance before God is not predicated upon their behavior but on the righteous life of Jesus Christ and his sacrificial death.” (p211)

i think i am addicted to the Coffee Club’s Turkish Delight Hot Chocolate… yes seriously.  is amazing.  tastes like real hot turkish delight.  beautiful.  fragrant.  hot.  perfect for chilly mornings here in auckland at the moment and perfect with good conversation.

billy graham is one of my heroes.  i have about 15 books about him or by him.  such an inspiration and challenge.  i love the consistency he has lived his life and ministry – full on and authentically for Jesus, all the time, in full view.

currently these are my 2 fav tv shows.  anyone could guess this.  how come?  the connection between both programmes.  LOST.  yes, i’m still obsessed with it and thus so, i love Person of Interest (has Michael Emmerson aka Ben, aka Finch, as the main actor… love it) and Once Upon A Time which the other day had some wonderful lostisms incl Appollo Bars.  seriously made me happy

i got this wonderful mandoline for mothers day.  we had been watching THE FOOD TRUCK a few weeks ago and the chef used one of these to make healthy alternatives to potato chips.  the kids thought i so needed one.  so i got one for mothers day.  and used it that night and tonight to make kai.  last night it was crunchy potato fries and tonight it was carrots.  talk about easy peasy.  love it!

been challenged about this today as i commented on someones wall on fb about the language they were using – as christians i believe we’re meant to be different, meant to shine and meant to be light and salt – not conformed to the patterns of the world and not conformed to the standards of the world.  it challenged me to look at the light i am shinning – we cant excuse our behaviour when it falls short but should lean into the grace and truth of God and ask for His empowerment, help and motivation/inspiration to live according to His ways.  we are the light of the world… lets shine  You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.  You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a peck measure, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.  Matthew 5:12-16

my daughter does ballet on thursday afternoons and has the most wonderful ballet teacher – they’re having so much fun learning steps and routines.

excited much that fringe is restarting on tv this week.  fringe has been me and my husbands “thing” to watch this year, we rewatched via dvd the previous series to catch up to season 4.  love it!  not as much as LOST.  but still LOVE IT!.

 

 

Mothers Day 3

on monday we had our Mainly Music @ The River Mothers Day Celebration – so much fun – such a great opportunity to bless and encourage the mums/grandmas/caregivers that come along.  one of our team is uber creative and made a garden of mothers.  beautiful.

once, when i was about 20, i did a word study on the word ALL.  i LOVE the word ALL.  i love a lot of small words, but of them all, ALL is my most favourite.

i used a concordance and a pen.

i looked up every reference to the word all.  there are a lot of them!

some were general – like “all the people went xyz”

some were challenging – like “love the Lord your God with all your heart”

and some were faith building – like “now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us”

Where Faith Gets Messy is a powerful blog post by Lysa TerKeurst about her journey with pain.  today.  like she is walking through it in front of us and with us, now.  and its profound and encouraging and inspiring.  and i’m praying for her.   and strengthened by her.

I whispered, “I’m slipping God. I can’t stand this for another minute. Much less 5 more minutes. Or 5 more hours. Seriously God. I can’t. I’m trying to be brave. I’m trying to deal with it. I’ve claimed your healing. I’ve begged for your healing. And I truly believe you are healing me. But in this minute, I’m freaking out. And I’m so sorry if “freaking” is a bad word-I’m still on the fence about that one. But, really God, I feel myself falling and I can’t figure out what to grab onto.”

Gosh this is where faith gets awfully messy, isn’t it?

You have heard it said, “you are what you eat.” A very wise nutritionist said once that this is not actually the truth. In actuality, you are what you metabolize. If your body does not absorb what you eat, it passes through and has no impact on the building blocks of your physiology.

The same can be said of the words, actions, and various other messages that bombard you daily.  Proverbs 23:7 tells us that “…as we believe in our heart, so are we…” We are bathed daily in a world of people and their various responses to and interactions with us.  Somewhere in those interactions we become what we allow into our hearts. This in mind, we should learn what it means to “guard our hearts above all else” (Proverbs 4:23).

Boundaries are those invisible dividing lines whereby I maintain myself as separate and distinct from anyone else. My emotions are my own. My desires and goals are my own. My values are my own. My body belongs to me and I am responsible to maintain everything that belongs to me.

My boundaries allow me to prevent you from defining my identity and my worth, while allowing me to receive from you that which I choose to receive. My boundaries allow me to define my areas of responsibility in life, and the areas for which I will not take responsibility.

Boundaries are not simply a way to prescribe rules and prohibitions. They are a way to sort out people. A way to help people maintain a healthy sense of self, and therefore to define the parameters of healthy relationships.  When the Bible tells us to guard our hearts above all else, it is referring to ways to allow God to define and protect that which is most true about you as a the individual person He created.  From The Good Woman Project

this popped onto my radar just now, and thought it was so worth sharing.  its about motherhood and the joys and the hardships.  the hardest job, and the best job.  while my kids may not be aiming for Olympic glory, they are living and dreaming and i’m there, behind them, serving them, loving them, growing them.  yesterday my son had an altercation with an escalator.  while he was out with granny.  my heart lept when my husband, after talking to her on the phone, said “i’m off to the a&e to meet caleb there, he’s gashed his leg and needs stitches.” i cried when caleb called me on his dads phone to tell me what happened and that he needed injections and stitches.  quiet cry, but still tears.  that i wasnt with him and that he was hurt.  motherhood takes a big heart, and i’m glad we have a big God.

loving this book by jud wilhite – lori, his wife, is one of the wonderful Leading & Loving It ladies and so when i saw it at the christian bookshop I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT.  plus it has an orange cover.  awesomeness. this book is crammed through with stuff that is so relevant for me right now, and for some of my housegroupies.  so much so i went back and got a few more copies to lend away.  my highlighter is having a fest.  it oozes the grace and love of God, that THAT is the most important way about seeing who we are.

I had it all backwards. The main thing was not my love for God, but his love for me. And from that love I respond to God as one deeply flawed, yet loved. I’m not looking to prove my worth. I’m not searching for acceptance. I’m living out of the worth God already declares I have. I’m embracing his view of me and in the process discovering the person he created me to be.

did the washing today.   thats always a good thing to do on a sunny day.  but thats not what i love.  its the 4 river tshirts hanging in a row.  they’re our church tshirts and they’re awesome, but most importantly, our church is awesome.  best church in the world.

kidnaped the kids and took them to the lorax at the movies last week and loved it!  colourful and cute it even had a “message” in there (not the save the planet one) about if you want to reap you’ve got to sow and let it grow…  such a good lesson for life.  loved the larger in life characters and did i mention the cuteness factor???

on sunday i was preaching in the morning service, and i dont know if this is a norm for blokes when they’re preaching, but a big decision for me is WHAT TO WEAR.  i got my family to vote on what top to wear with the new military jacket i wore… and this is the final choice, which i had bought last year to wear at a women’s conference.  i so do love this top!  good choice whanau!

on wednesday last week i took a bunch of my sons mates bowling for his birthday event.  was semi chaotic but lots of fun and the main thing is that caleb liked it.  10 year old boys are such fascinating creatures!

on friday night the kids went to church for a movie night and were looked after by the childrens church leaders – yay for them.  and us parents were free to go out on a date – which was the premise of the night.  which for us was semi tricky to organise based around my food restrictions been wheat/egg/GF free.  yay for the suggestion of nandos who have a wonderful clear allergen specifying menu.  it made ordering easy.  and there were multiple options.  both of us had a delicious meal!  was great to then wander around the shops and just hang out before joining the kids for the end of their movie and heading home.  so ka pai nandos for catering for “special people” like me!

we had a fun sunday afternoon at grannys for lunch and then the kids played up the tree and lapped up the shine.  yay for dairy free sweet williams easter bunnies too – that evangeline so loved and was so happy to eat (they taste nice and they look cute!)  i confess i brought 4 packets (with 15 in them each) so we are stocked for chocolate treats for her for the year!  because i am now wheat free (back to the doctor today to talk more about the results) i had pineapple lumps and jaffas – which i confess i think is a gift from God because out of all the lollies in the world they are my 2 favourites. seriously.

 

i shared this the other day but again was so moved by this song and this clip of Jesus RISEN – is ALIVE by Natalie Grant.  my pastor had asked if i had seen anything on youtube worth sharing that fit the service and resurrectionness of sunday and up to friday morning nothing really stood out.  i actually saw the clip mentioned and linked to on twitter and knew within about 4 seconds of viewing that THIS WAS IT.  but still, on the big screen, i was so moved.  i had to ask if my mascara had run (i have new mascara) as i totally cried and was stirred throughout (even though i had previewed it!)

our housegroup had an 80’s night last week… loved the committment of everyone to dress up and get into the spirit of things, incl a guy who grew facial hair and got his sister to take him op shopping. he came very miami vice looking… we talked about overcoming the past and then watched the original 21 jump street (some of our peeps are maybe keen to see the new version – but seriously they were totally into the johnny depp 80’s tv series!  had to kick them out after 2 episodes!) and i must say… 80s tv is shot VERY differently!

i have a fantastic friend who does amazing adverts – and he’s in this one.  carrying a chicken.  it so makes my heart smile.  because i like adverts.  and i like seeing my friend living a dream.

this is from the silly party that the children’s church had on sunday for an end of term celebration.  i love how my kids embraced it… 

my son turned 10 yesterday and he has those amazing lashes too.  he has the cutest freckles across the bridge of his nose and the most amazing tan lines from being outside all the time over summer.  i love to walk past him and run my hand over his head after a fresh haircut.  and he loves backwards cuddles, esp now that he comes up to my chin.  he is my heart.

and my daughter, who is 6 and a half is delightful.  the day she was born i put her on my shoulder and she nuzzled in and God said "she is delightful" and she is.  she gives the sweetest hugs and has crazy energy and genetically knew that backrubs were akin to goodness. 

its good to remember these things, in the midst of "last week of term tiredness" and drinks that get knocked over and mud tracked through the house… they’re mine.  a gift from God.

the discovery that pineapple lumps and jaffas, officially my favourite lollies, are wheat free, brought much rejoicing to my heart this week.  for those not in the know last week i had some tests and came out as allergic to wheat.  so am for 2 weeks (which the doc thinks will be lifetime lifestyle) i am wheat free.  i have some other allergies too (egg, nuts, shellfish) and my daughter is dairy/nut free so we’re pretty good at reading labels and adjusting.  have a few specialists to see as my ige (perhaps) levels were majorly high.  now am the proud owner of an anapen and am getting a medic alert cowboy belt buckle… i mean bracelet (i think a cowboy buckle size to write all the things that are meant to be on it!)

last night we had a housegroup round for, you guessed it waffles.  waffles are a gift from God for ministry.  has been one of our best connector tools – having people round for waffles and conversation.  so exciting to see a young man on fire for God looking forward with expectation to see how God unfolds his life.

got an exciting text from my sister today.  for about 6 months i’ve been praying something person and specific at her request.  she isn’t a christian, yet.  and today IT happened.  the prayers were answered.  and she recognized and acknowledged that the breakthrough happened cos of prayers, that the answer didn’t come naturally but supernaturally!

The Answer is Not The Treasure

We are mistaken if we think the answered prayer is the main treasure. The answer is the treasure we seek.

The answer is but a click of the lock. And we’re so busy trying to figure out if the click sounded like a “yes” or a “no” answer, we forget to open the chest.

The Treasure is…

The treasure is what the answered prayer reveals about God after we have drawn near to Him intimately to behold His character displayed in His workings and gifts.
