‘I have one passion: it is Jesus, Jesus only.’

.

i was reading some of my older posts today and came across this one which continues to resonate in my heart:

Kudos to Helen @ Helen Has A Blog for this post that i found incredibly challenging in a good way.

Sometimes we can look at the outside of a person – or the outside of ourselves and think we’re doing okay, when in fact we’re acting a bit loveless. My heart in posting this ISNT so that we feel condemned or inferior or inadequate but that we remember what the main thing is as Christians – loving God.

  • reading books about the Bible/God is no substitute for reading the Bible
  • talking about God is no substitute for talking to God
  • having friends who go deep in God is no substitute for going deep in God yourself
  • planning lots of fasting days and huge chunks of set-aside prayer time etc etc… but always intending yet never actually doing… is no substitute for being faithful with a little (Matthew 25:21)
  • being able to quote a whole bunch of verses off the top of your head is no substitute for having them written on your heart (Proverbs 7:3)
  • knowing facts about God is no substitute for intimate knowledge of the Person of God
  • speed-reading your way through lots of chapters is no substitute for long and loving meditation
  • having numerous commentaries sitting on your bookshelf is no substitute for actively pursuing the knowledge of God
  • listening to a worship CD is no substitute for actually worshipping the Lord physically being in a prayer meeting is no substitute for actually praying… just your heart crying out to the Lord…
  • hearing the word of God is no substitute for putting it into practice (Ezekiel 33:31)
  • sacrifice is no substitute for obedience (1 Samuel 15:22)
  • having His name ever on my lips is no substitute for having Him close to my heart (Jeremiah 12:2)
  • “having it all together” on the outside is no substitute for a heart of truth, humility and righteousness (Matthew 23:27)
  • being able to put Daniel 9 in a nice little timeline is no substitute for a heart that is truly prepared for the End Times
  • having the role of a lead worshipper is no substitute for encountering the Lord in worship
  • a big ministry is no substitute for personal fellowship with the Lord… where it’s just you and Him alone…
  • a quick ‘thanks God’ when everything seems to be going well is no substitute for truly living with a grateful heart in all seasons and situations

saying all this ^^ is no substitute for actually living it

So we want to ask that God would continue to stir up in us a heart for the nations, a passion for the nations and an open-handedness that says, “I want to be a part of what God’s doing here, what God’s accomplishing here and how He’s going to save and work here.” We want to more and more push all our chips in on the great drama that is unfolding and that we’ve been invited to, the great love story that encompasses the universe, the conquering of evil once and for all in Jesus Christ, the invitation to come be a part of something infinitely larger then ourselves.

“…when we love God, we naturally run to Him-frequently and zealously. Jesus didn’t command that we have a regular time with Him each day. Rather, He tells us to ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ He called this the ‘first and greatest commandment’ (Matt. 22:37-38). The results are intimate prayer and study of His Word. Our motivation changes from guilt to love.”

When Jesus said ‘Follow Me’ to 12 men, they left everything they knew and followed… not because He promised them success, nor because He assured them they would change the world. They followed Him because who He was (and is)! They followed because they heard the ‘words of eternal life’, and it made their hearts burn within them. They followed not because of where the road would lead them, but rather because of the qualities of the Man they would get to walk that road with! I want to change the world… I want to succeed. But I follow because He is worthy, beautiful, powerful, infinitely superior and unsurpassable in every way!    Kristen Williams

No matter what our job is, we view it not as our purpose in life but rather as where God has sovereignly placed us for the purpose of making Christ known and his name great. If you are a teacher, if you are a politician, if you are a businessman, if you are in agriculture, if you are in construction, if you are in technology, if you are in the arts, then you should not be saying, ‘I need to find my life’s purpose in this work,’ but rather, ‘I need to bring God’s purpose to this work.’”

there is no better thing for me than a monday.  its one of my most favourite seven days.

because its that opportunity to walk out into our week, into our real life, into the real world, into our workplace, the things that God is doing and has done and will do in and through us

its an opportunity to overflow what i learned and was inspired by on sunday into the real people in my life

be it the workplace

at home with my family

with my friends

THIS IS MINISTRY

this is real life, this is the real world

sunday fills me for the purpose of spilling that out and demonstrating that God is real and loving and awesome

God’s decision to forgive Peter required the death of his Son; Peter’s decision to forgive those who had offended him would cost him little more than his pride. The same is true for us.  In the shadow of my hurt, forgiveness feels like a decision to reward my enemy. But in the shadow of the cross, forgiveness is merely a gift from one undeserving soul to another. Forgiveness is the gift that ensures my freedom from a prison of bitterness and resentment.

“God’s perspective on us is remarkable, almost unbelievable. He delights in us and loves us as a caring Father. He’s running toward us, ready to embrace and forgive us. He’s for us in all the pain of life and can sustain us in every challenge. as i learn to see from God’s perspective, my perspective on everything else shifts. i realize that my failures don’t disqualify me. i’m aware of the security i already have in God’s grace. i trust that nothing will separate me from the love of God in Christ.”

~ Jud Wilhite

Where Faith Gets Messy is a powerful blog post by Lysa TerKeurst about her journey with pain.  today.  like she is walking through it in front of us and with us, now.  and its profound and encouraging and inspiring.  and i’m praying for her.   and strengthened by her.

I whispered, “I’m slipping God. I can’t stand this for another minute. Much less 5 more minutes. Or 5 more hours. Seriously God. I can’t. I’m trying to be brave. I’m trying to deal with it. I’ve claimed your healing. I’ve begged for your healing. And I truly believe you are healing me. But in this minute, I’m freaking out. And I’m so sorry if “freaking” is a bad word-I’m still on the fence about that one. But, really God, I feel myself falling and I can’t figure out what to grab onto.”

Gosh this is where faith gets awfully messy, isn’t it?

….

God was saying, “Backtrack and remember all the places where I’ve been so faithful before in your life. And know. Know with assurance. And boldness. And confidence. I AM. I AM the same faithful God.”

You have heard it said, “you are what you eat.” A very wise nutritionist said once that this is not actually the truth. In actuality, you are what you metabolize. If your body does not absorb what you eat, it passes through and has no impact on the building blocks of your physiology.

The same can be said of the words, actions, and various other messages that bombard you daily.  Proverbs 23:7 tells us that “…as we believe in our heart, so are we…” We are bathed daily in a world of people and their various responses to and interactions with us.  Somewhere in those interactions we become what we allow into our hearts. This in mind, we should learn what it means to “guard our hearts above all else” (Proverbs 4:23).

Boundaries are those invisible dividing lines whereby I maintain myself as separate and distinct from anyone else. My emotions are my own. My desires and goals are my own. My values are my own. My body belongs to me and I am responsible to maintain everything that belongs to me.

My boundaries allow me to prevent you from defining my identity and my worth, while allowing me to receive from you that which I choose to receive. My boundaries allow me to define my areas of responsibility in life, and the areas for which I will not take responsibility.

Boundaries are not simply a way to prescribe rules and prohibitions. They are a way to sort out people. A way to help people maintain a healthy sense of self, and therefore to define the parameters of healthy relationships.  When the Bible tells us to guard our hearts above all else, it is referring to ways to allow God to define and protect that which is most true about you as a the individual person He created.  From The Good Woman Project
